Ian Franklin

Ian had been a Cycleworks customer for many years before joining us in 2007. An ex roadie, trackie and time trialist, he hung his wheels up in 1971 (how long ago?). He started off road riding in 1998 but a new road bike in 2007 re-awakened his love of the dark side. A crash in 2008 in which he suffered a broken hip and other injuries (ask him why he rates “S works” helmets so highly), wrote off best part of that year but 2009 saw him bounce back riding LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) races.

Favourite quote “No prizes for training”

Ian Frankin

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

Predominately road. I relish the adrenaline rush from being in a tight bunch in a road or circuit race. On club/training rides I enjoy the companionship and friendly rivalry that is missing on 4 hour solo rides.

What do you ride?

  • 2007 Specialized Tarmac Comp with SRAM Rival as a winter/ride to work bike.
  • 2009 Specialized Tarmac Pro with SRAM Red for racing/good weather.
  • On-one Scandal singlespeed. with Fox float forks and tubeless Fire XCs.

Why did you chose those bikes?

The Tarmacs were chosen because of their ride qualities, lifetime frame warranty and value for money.

The single speed because of its simplicity and low maintenance during winter.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?

Until 1971 when I retired I rode a full programme of road, track and time trials for the Sorian CC in SW London. I am now a member of VC Meudon and in 2009 started to ride LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists)and Surrey League events.

Phil Cordery

Phil’s a downhiller, dirt jumper and budding cross country rider and he’s learning more all the time. You can normally find him riding the Surrey hills or Hindhead having a good time on whichever bike he pulled out the shed first.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

I am a mountain biker at heart, mainly due to the fact that I enjoy more technical riding and also the ability to go anywhere over any terrain.

What do you ride?

  • Orange 224 downhill bike with Electric Blue paint job, Fox 40 RC2 forks, PUSH tuned Fox DHX 5.0 rear shock, Shimano Saint Drivetrain, Shimano Xt brakes.
  • I work at Cycleworks so I have to own an Orange 5 (it would be frowned upon otherwise!). Neon Green paint job, Rockshox Pikes, either a Fox RP23 or custom built Fox Vanilla RC rear shock (Thanks MOJO!), Hope Wheels, Shimano Xt groupset.
  • Titanium Cotic with Rockshox Reba Team, Middleburn RS7 cranks, Sram X9/XO drivetrain, Hope/Mavic 819 wheels.
  • Specialized Roubaix Expert road bike.

Why did you choose those bikes?

The Orange 224 was bought to upgrade my old S-Works DH, I have spent the last two years and too much cash on upgrading the components to make it the perfect bike. It’s worth the money in my eyes and is my favorite bike out of the lot.

The Orange 5 is my do it all bike. I have a couple of rear shocks to swap between, these let me use it for everything from cross country to mini downhill racing. I really can’t see myself having to replace it!

The Cotic Soda is my xc race/winter bike I have only just finished getting it built and the arrival of a new single speed rear hub from hope will have it running single speed throughout the winter.

The Specialized Roubaix was bought as a commuting bike to ride to Leatherhead from Guildford when I was working there. If I’m honest it is the least used of my bikes at the moment but with the summer round the corner I may start using it more.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?

In 2008 I raced in the old Dragon Downhill series and a couple of the mini downhill events in 2009. Plans for this year and future years are to race the new Welsh downhill series, the Gorrick XC series and some endurance downhill events.
