As a Cytech Level 2 certified mechanic and previous team rider for DMR, Charge and NS, Mike really knows his way around a bike. He’s now utilising his skills as a test rider for Whyte and has provided feedback on the new 2011 range.

Mike has also had a big input on the Cycleworks jump displays by making and riding the jump ramps- repeatedly a key part of the show.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

I predominantly ride ‘trail’ nowadays, loving the freedom it gives. It’s great to spend time with mates riding where you want to, as fast as you want to and for as long as you want to.

What do you ride?

  • Orange Five with dropper seatpost, Rockshox Revelations and 1×9 gearing.

Why did you choose this bike?

I bought the Five because I just loved the way it rides. It’s robust, jumps well and climbs well- regardless of what’s thrown at it, it delivers.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?

I placed seventh in the Europe wide competition ‘Whitestyle’ and qualified at the 2008 Nissan Qashqui series before riding jump demos for Nissan at the Geneva motor show that year. I also won the N.A.S.S King of Dirt competition back in 2005.

Aaron Budd

Aaron’s been with Cycleworks for almost four years, starting as a Saturday boy before progressing up to the role of Assistant Manager. Whilst mountain biker and often found on the local trails he still maintains an interest in road cycling. Aaron has a broad knowledge of the cycling trade and has also completed the Cytech Level 2 mechanic’s qualification.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

I am a mountain biker at heart and enjoy cross country riding the most. I’ve also dabbled in some downhill after riding for a month in Whistler this summer, spending everyday up and down the mountain and am hoping to get back into that in the New Year.

What do you ride?

  • 2011 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Elite with a mix of Sram and Shimano XTR and Roval Traverse wheels, Raceface Sixc and Thomson finishing kit, with a set of custom Chris King hubs on Stans Arch rims in the pipeline!
  • 2003 Specialized Allez comp with Shimano 105 on Hope Ti-Glide hubs and Dt Swiss rims and Easton bits.
  • 1969 Holdsworth Mistral set up as a fixie.

Why did you choose those bikes?

The Stumpjumper is a great full sus’ cross country bike that climbs well but can still handle any of the harsher riding I can throw at it. I’m also looking forward to putting it to the test in places like Afan in Wales as I think it will be great for that sort of riding. I love the fact that it flies up a hill but is still really stable and good fun on the descents.

The Allez is a new addition and is my all purpose road bike. I use it for commuting to work and back and it occasionally ventures out for a recreational road ride.

The Holdsworth gets me to and from the pub/station and is great fun. I acquired it as a standard road bike setup but converted it into a fixed wheeled bike.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?

After riding downhill solidly for a month in Whistler I am planning on getting a ‘DH’ bike in the near future so will see how that goes. Also depending on how much training I manage to keep up over the winter I might be tempted to have a go at some road and cross country races but nothing serious yet as I am new to the whole concept.

Ben Marks

Ben’s been on two wheels for longer than he can remember and has crossed a number of disciplines in that time. Ben’s most at home when he’s sessioning that new line at the trails or blasting the singletrack in the Surrey hills.

What do you ride?

  • The main ride is a stealthy Specialized Tarmac kitted out with 11 speed Campagnolo, 3T finishing kit and a pair of superlight FastForward tubular wheels for racing.
  • The latest edition to the stable is a Blue Norcross for beasting the cyclocross and commuting duties this winter.
  • I have whittled my MTB collection down to one Specialized Stumpjumper hardtail do-it-all machine, which has already seen a season of abuse. I’m looking forward to thrashing this at the Welsh trail centres and local Gorrick races this winter.
  • The daily machine is my beloved fixed gear, which racks up around 50miles a week doing the regular shopping and pub runs.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?

For 2010 I managed to attend a reasonable amount of local road races, finishing in some good positions at the end of the season. The highlight this year was attending the regional champs held in Bernay, France (twinned with Haslemere) where i managed to secure a lovely piece silverware for Haslemere.

I also attended the Mega avalanche in Alpe d’huez and qualified for the main race, which was super fun and mega hard work.

Aims for next year are gaining a first category road license and more Cyclocross racing.
