Dave Farmer
Dave is a company director and manager at our Leatherhead store. He has worked on and off at Cycleworks for almost ten years, starting as a mechanic and working his way up. He is the business technical guru so you can ask him anything (just be prepared to sit down for the detailed answer – stop me if I am boring you! Dave). He knows pretty much every trail and road in the Surrey hills and is out on a bike in most of his spare time. Dave is also a Cytech Level 2 certified mechanic.

What sort of cycling do you do?
I’ve been riding bikes pretty much since I could walk and my riding covers a very wide range of disciplines.
What do you ride?
- Specialized Tarmac S-works with a Campagnolo Chorus 10 speed groupset (yet to upgrade to 11 speed). Fulcrum racing one tubeless wheels. This bike is FAST, stiff and great fun on the Surrey lanes- I’ve just got to grow some bigger legs! My new PowerTap hub should help with with this though.
- Kinesis Racelight RC road bike with a mix of campagnolo Veloce, Chorus and Centaur bits. This is my training bike and rarely gets cleaned, but sees a lot of miles.
- A rather special Orange five which came into being after suggesting a few frame changes to Orange that I reckoned would bring the bike up to date. Orange were open to the idea of making a few ‘STRANGE’ fives so that they could see if the changes worked or not, and they do! The Strange Five has a tapered headtube, a 30.9mm seat-tube, the toptube length of an 18” frame but the height of a 16”, ISCG mounts and Maxle rear dropouts.
- Specialized Epic S-Works, XTR drivetrain, tubeless wheels and brain shocks that are far cleverer than me.
- Whyte 19 Carbon hardtail, 23lbs and fast yet stable. The Epic is faster as a race bike though, full suspension wins for outright speed in my opinion
- Kinesis Crosslight Cyclocross bike. A ratty collection of parts, and so wrong that it is right (especially when overtaking people on singletrack).
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
In 2009 I placed 44th in the Surrey League (road racing), 18th in the Surrey League Handicap Road race series and raced the Guildford town centre races which Cycleworks sponsored. My best mountain bike race of the year resulted in 4th place in the Tunnel Hill Gorrick event in February 2009 in the Super Masters category, then 13th at the first Southern XC race at Bordon in March. Since then I’ve been focusing on my road racing, competing at Dunsfold or Crystal Palace on Tuesdays, then the Surrey League Handicap Series on Thursday’s, and whatever I can squeeze in at the weekend.
John Heywood
What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
John enjoys any kind of cycling that puts a smile on his face. This can be as simple as popping to the shops on his Maxlite, riding the dirt jumps on his DMR or razzing round the singletrack in the surrey hills on any of his other bikes. The only thing John doesn’t do is take his cycling too seriously.
What do you ride?
- Orange Five Strange in stealth black with Fox 36 fork and RC4 rear shock.
- Orange Miii hardtail.
- Intense Tazer.
- Kinesis Maxlight hardtail.
- DMR Transition 24”.
- Santa Cruz Chameleon.
- PK Ripper 20″ (original!).
- Covert Project Black Electric bike.
Why did you choose those bikes?
I want to own every bike known to man, cross overs in type don’t exist any more!
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
The Kona Mash-up last year proved to John that he doesn’t like paying to ride his bike, and is not really cut out for competitive riding.
Sergi Canadas
Sergi started with us as a Saturday lad, and it now working full time before going on to further education. He is very enthusiastic and keen to learn everything about bikes, this knowledge is increasing all the time. All his bikes are very carefully colour co-ordinated, and all his wages get poured back into them (I don’t know why we even bother paying him! Dave).

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
Aggressive XC and jumping, I love going fast and getting a buzz from riding. I’m not too bothered about getting fitter, just having fun.
What do you ride?
- Orange Five, custom built with a black/neon orange frame, Shimano SLX brakes, Hope pro 2/Mavic EX721 wheels and very fashionable WIDE handlebars.
- Wilier Izoard Centaur road bike.
- Prototype Dialledbikes 24″ dirtjump bike.
- A very pretty custom built white and Neon Orange Eastern Element BMX.
Why did you choose those bikes?
Five: Obvious really, standard issue bike.
Dialled proto 24”: Light-weight jump bike.
Eastern Element BMX with colour co-ordinated Odyssey bits: Because it’s pretty.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
None in the past, but may do a Kona Mash-up type enduro event or two in the future.
Rob Line

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I’ll ride anything that has got two wheels and I love going fast.
What do you ride?
- Orange Five.
- Zion single-speed.
- Specialized Tarmac Pro.
Why did you choose those bikes?
With regard to the Orange, I really like the way the single pivots ride and handle and it means less maintenance for me.
Riding a singlespeed is great for training and again, low maintenance is a massive bonus.
The tarmac is my pimp ride.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
None as of yet- not until tea and cake stops are compulsory.
Any other comments about yourself and your cycling?
If anyone’s got some stabilisers that will fit any of my bikes, please get in touch!
