Dave Farmer

Dave is a company director and manager at our Leatherhead store. He has worked on and off at Cycleworks for almost ten years, starting as a mechanic and working his way up. He is the business technical guru so you can ask him anything (just be prepared to sit down for the detailed answer – stop me if I am boring you! Dave). He knows pretty much every trail and road in the Surrey hills and is out on a bike in most of his spare time. Dave is also a Cytech Level 2 certified mechanic.

What sort of cycling do you do?

I’ve been riding bikes pretty much since I could walk and my riding covers a very wide range of disciplines.

What do you ride?

  • Cervelo S3 2011 frame, with my Campagnolo Chorus/Record Groupset from my previous bike. I ride the bike with a choice of wheels, handbuilt mavic rims on Campy Record hubs, Mavic Ksyrium SL clincher wheels fro Crit’s and nice weather rides, and a set of 50mm deep carbon rims built onto Goldtech hubs.
  • Enigma Eclipse titanium road bike with a mix of campagnolo Veloce, Chorus and Centaur bits. This is my training bike and rarely gets cleaned, but sees a lot of miles, who cares, Titanium is self cleaning:)
  • A rather special Orange five which came into being after suggesting a few frame changes to Orange that I reckoned would bring the bike up to date. Orange were open to the idea of making a few ‘STRANGE’ fives so that they could see if the changes worked or not, and they do! The Strange Five has a tapered headtube, a 30.9mm seat-tube, the toptube length of an 18” frame but the height of a 16”, ISCG mounts and Maxle rear dropouts
  • Specialized 2011 Epic S-Works, XTR drivetrain, tubeless wheels and brain shocks that are far cleverer than me
  • Whyte 19 Carbon hardtail, 23lbs and fast yet stable. The Epic is faster as a race bike though, full suspension wins for outright speed in my opinion. The Whyte is a nice handling bike, but some of my other bikes are faster……
  • Yeti ARC Big Top 29er hardtail, built with Fox forks, Hope brakes, and no-tubes rims. 29er bikes are FAST!
  • Specialized Crux Cyclocross bike. A ratty collection of parts, and so wrong that it is right (especially when overtaking people on singletrack)

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?

In 2009 I placed 44th in the Surrey League (road racing), 18th in the Surrey League Handicap Road race series and raced the Guildford town centre races which Cycleworks sponsored. My best mountain bike race of the year resulted in 4th place in the Tunnel Hill Gorrick event in February 2009 in the Super Masters category, then 13th at the first Southern XC race at Bordon in March. Since then I’ve been focusing on my road racing, competing at Dunsfold or Crystal Palace on Tuesdays, then the Surrey League Handicap Series on Thursday’s, and whatever I can squeeze in at the weekend.

In 2010 and 2011 i have been racing less, due to the arival of my first child, but loving riding my bike just as much as ever. I love the fact that i can commute to work every day on the bike, and pack a fair bit of riding into my life.

Tom Shrimpton

Tom is the assistant manager here at the Leatherhead store. He has worked in the bike trade for over five years, and is happy to help you with any enquiries about any bike. Tom has a holy passion for technical information about bikes, this probably stems from his racing career in his teens, and gives him a good understanding of how bikes and cars handle at speed.

Bikes;

  • Specialized Tarmac SL3 S-works, custom built with SRAM Red groupset and Mavic wheels.
  • Specialized Roubaix Comp, custom built for riding to and from work. Tom doesn’t own a car, despite being our tame racing driver.

Carl Howland

You may not see Carl in the shop very much but if you’re a Cycleworks customer it’s very likely he’ll have worked on your bike at some point. Previously a brand manager for Sram and an ex Cannondale team mechanic, Carl is a highly qualified and diligent member of the team. Carl has also achieved the Cytech Level 2 qualification.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

I have been a roadie for a number of years, racing a lot back in South Africa. I enjoy the speed & sometimes the isolation -time to clear your head, but also the whole working in a bunch etc. Over the last few years I’ve started mountain biking, started out on a hardtail & now have a full susser. Mountain biking was my escape from the seriousness of road cycling, so when I head to the hills its for fun & a bit of time out.

What do you ride?

  • Cannondale six13 (custom spec- Sram rival with Force chainset & American Classic CR420 wheelset)
  • Cannondale Caffiene hardtail (custom specced- X0/X9 mix, Avid Juicy 7′s with hand built DT Swiss D4.2′s on Hope hubs, Reba race fork for now, but Lefty Speed going on soon)
  • Cannondale Prophet (custom specced- X0 kit with Avid Elixir CR’s, Mavic 819′s, Truvativ Boxguide chain device, Lefty Max fork)
  • Specialized Enduro Comp (standard kit)

Why did you choose those bikes?

My Road bike was from sponsorship, the mountain bikes were from working with Cannondale for a long time.
The Specialized is a new venture, so we’ll see how i get on ;)

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?

I used to do a lot of road racing, haven’t done much since moving to the UK, but keen to try my hand at a bit of xc racing or enduro’s , maybe get back into road racing.

Paul Drake

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?

I road race. I got totally hooked when I took it up about 3 years ago. I prefer 100-130km road races that are hilly and stage races rather than a 1 hour crit!
I’m a 2nd cat at the mo. Hoping to gain 1st cat next season.

What do you ride?

  • A Specialized S-works SL3 Project Black with Sram Red throughout and Mavic Ksyrium SR wheels.
  • A Specialized Crux Cyclocross training bike, pretty versatile bike that i can ride anywhere, in any conditions. I mainly ride on the road on this bike, but with a change of tyres i can get offroad any time I want.

Why did you choose this bike?
My coach recommended Specialized about 3 years ago before I worked in the trade as awesome bikes at a competitive price.

Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?
I’ve completed the Marmotte twice (Glandon, Telegraph, Galibier and Alpe d’Huez – 174km, 5000m of climbing) and the Granfondo Pinarello in Italy (200km in the Dolomites). For now I’m focusing on road racing though.

Phil Moore

Phil is our newest recruit here at Leatherhead, he is absolutely nuts about bikes and has been working on them for more than a couple of decades. Phil rides as loudly as he talks, and rides pretty much any type of bike, FAST.

bikes;

  • Kinesis Cross bike
  • Kinesis KR810 carbon hardtail

Phil Rides for the Kinesis Morvelo team. The team is sponsored by Upgrade bikes, the distributor for Kinesis bikes/Tektro/Reynolds wheels.
