Mike Smith
Mike’s been riding jump/downhill for 7 years and as a former DMR rider, he’s now riding NS Bikes for 2010. He can generally be found upside-down at the trails, hitting the local downhill tracks or riding cross country on Tuesday night. Mike recently placed seventh in the Europe wide competition ‘Whitestyle’ and is currently approaching the qualifying stages on this year’s Nissan Qashqui series. A previous trophy under his belt is winning the N.A.S.S 2005 King of Dirt, and taking the title at a small competition in Portugal in 2008.
In 2006 Mike was part of a Jump/Street display (with Martin Ashton no less), and March 2008 saw him riding demos for Nissan at the Geneva motor show.
Mike has also had a big input on the cycleworks jump displays by making and riding the jump ramps, which is a key part of the show.
Mike is also a Cytech Level 2 certified mechanic.

What do you ride?
- NS Majesty Gold custom build.
- Lapierre X Control 210 with sunline V1 bar, Avid Juicy Carbons & KSI900 seatpost.
- Orange Five with Rockshox Revelations.
Tom Gardner
Tom has just started a new role in the company but has been around for five years as a saturday boy, sales consultant and assistant manager. You may not see him on the shop floor so much now, but he’ll soon have a swanky new office in the Petersfield store. Tom has also completed his Cytech Level 2 qualification in Cycle Maintenance.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I’m definitely a mountain biker at heart despite the occasional foray over to the dark side to indulge my lycra fetish. Since spending 6 weeks on holiday this summer riding in Morzine, Les Gets and Whistler I’m not looking forward to pedalling uphill again but having said that, a broken shoulder means I won’t be riding at all for a while!
What do you ride?
- The obligatory Orange Five. I’m sure customers think there’s something funny going on because a majority of the staff own a Five but I rode most of the competition before I bought mine and it just felt ‘right’. Wide bars, chain device and lairy neon green are the name of the game here.
- Banshee Legend MkII with Boxxer teams, Hadley hubs, Raceface and Straitline finishing kit and Sram drivetrain.
- Kinesis Maxlight XC. This is currently singlespeed’d for a laugh when the trails are a bit grotty.
- Specialized Tarmac Elite. I’d never call myself a roadie but its good fun to go out for a spin when the sun’s shining!
Why did you choose those bikes?
As above, the Five just felt ‘right’ when I rode it. It laps up the singletrack round here but is ‘gnarly’ enough to ride in the Alps as well, especially with the build it’s got at the moment.
The Banshee was my latest purchase whilst out in Whistler. The Five was great on the freeride/jump trails like Freight Train and A-Line, but the rootier, rockier trails needed something with a bit more bounce. I’m planning to do another trip to France or Canada next year and potentially some UK downhill races before then so it should get a fair bit of use.
My Tarmac was more of an impulse purchase to tick another box on my list of bikes. I quickly grew to love riding it though so I’m pleased it’s in the ‘stable’.
The Kinesis has been through a huge number of spec changes since I bought it four years ago. It’s more at home with a lightweight XC geared build but everyone needs a singlespeed to ride so it’s been like that for the last couple of winters.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
The plan was to start racing downhill at Aston Hill on the 5th of September but injury has unfortunately stopped that from happening. I hope to start competing in the not too distant future though. I won’t be aiming for podiums but hopefully I won’t be right at the back…
Dan Black
Dan is the youngest full time member of Cycleworks staff but makes up for his lack of age with plenty of enthusiasm. He’s been riding bikes for 4-5 years and started off dirt jumping before progressing in racing downhill and more recently cross country (with the arrival of a new bike). Now sponsored by Last bikes and Funn componentry, Dan can normally be found at his local trails in Sheet or a top secret skatepark somewhere in Hampshire. For the muddier side of riding he’ll be on his Marin down at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or the South Downs.

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I most ride dirt jumps, but also cross country and a bit of downhill.
What do you ride?
- Last Bikes Ruffnix with Funn componentry.
- Sunday BMX.
- Fourscale 44 Fixie.
Why did you choose those bikes?
I’m sponsored by Last bikes and Funn components so the Ruffnix is a team bike for 2010. The Sunday was chosen because it’s light and strong and perfect for riding street and park. The fixie is my commuting bike!
