Simon’s the longest serving member of Cycleworks, Director and Manager of Petersfield. He’s been in the Cycle trade for 18 years and is still enjoying it!
Simon has raced on the road in Brittany, France at 19yrs old and ended up staying there for 5 seasons. He arrived in France with an English 1st cat licence(there was no elite licence) and managed to win in all categories .
Simon is also a Cytech Level 2 certified mechanic.
What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I mainly ride road and cross-country. I like road riding as I love the way you can whizz around the country side under your own steam. We’re lucky to have beautiful, fairly quiet roads in Surrey and Hampshire. Cross-country gives me the ability to go and explore and after having several years off the MTB I’m enjoying trying to get some speed back and improve my skills.
What do you ride?
- Cervelo SLC SL
- 2012 Specialized Epic Comp Carbon 29er
Why did you choose those bikes?
The Cervelo was chosen for its aerodynamics, light weight and stiffness. The frame weighs less than a kilo and is slightly stiffer than the S2 below it. I also trust the carbon engineering at Cervelo- anyone can make a light carbon frame, but to make one ride well and to last is a different matter.
My new Epic was chosen because i was on a test day with Spesh and half way around the first lap i loved the 29er version so much i had sold the 26″ version in my head. It climbs better than the older version, it feels faster on the flat. I feel you can run a slightly shallower tread pattern because of the extra contact area, which makes it feel better in fast loose corners. I enjoy doing some distance, I wanted to have a little more control on the descents(over a hardtail), more comfort and without sacrificing climbing ability.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?
I rode l’Etape du Tour Mont Ventoux stage a few years ago. I need a new goal so im planning the south downs way in a day in may/june 2012, training has started!

What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I’ll ride anything that has got two wheels and I love going fast.
What do you ride?
- Specialized Epic Evo
- Orange Five
- Zion single-speed
- Specialized Tarmac Pro
Why did you choose those bikes?
The Epic climbs like a mountain goat on acid to the top of the trail and then behaves like a hooligan when you show it something twisty and techy, encouraging you to explore where its limits might lie. It could possibly be described as the ultimate trail bike for the Surrey Hills.
With regard to the Orange, I really like the way the single pivots ride and handle and it means less maintenance for me.
Riding a singlespeed is great for training and again, low maintenance is a massive bonus.
The tarmac is my pimp ride.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past, any planned this year, and any in the future?
None as of yet- not until tea and cake stops are compulsory.
Any other comments about yourself and your cycling?
If anyone’s got some stabilisers that will fit any of my bikes, please get in touch!

Tom has just started a new role in the company but has been around for five years as a saturday boy, sales consultant and assistant manager. You may not see him on the shop floor so much now, but he’ll soon have a swanky new office in the Petersfield store. Tom has also completed his Cytech Level 2 qualification in Cycle Maintenance.
What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I’m definitely a mountain biker at heart despite the occasional foray over to the dark side to indulge my lycra fetish. I spent 6 weeks on holiday this summer riding in Morzine, Les Gets and Whistler before returning home with a broken shoulder but I’m back on two wheels again after a slight shakeup of bikes and looking forward to getting muddy again.
What do you ride?
- Kinesis Maxlight XC. This is currently my main bike after thinning out the fleet. It’s built up with full XTR, tubeless wheels, a chain device and wide bars- not your typical XC hardtail!
- Banshee Legend MkII with Boxxer teams, Hadley hubs, Raceface and Straitline finishing kit and Sram drivetrain.
- Specialized Tarmac Elite. I’d never call myself a roadie but its good fun to go out for a spin when the sun’s shining!
- Maybe a new full sus to follow in 2011?
Why did you choose those bikes?
The Kinesis has been through a huge number of spec changes since I bought it four years ago. Typically built with a lightweight XC geared spec, I’ve decided to go a little different after selling my Five and it’s now a pretty pimped ‘hardcore(ish) hardtail’, perfect for the trails round here.
The Banshee was my latest purchase whilst out in Whistler. The Five was great on the freeride/jump trails like Freight Train and A-Line, but the rootier, rockier trails needed something with a bit more bounce. I’m planning to do another trip to France or Canada next year and potentially some UK downhill races before then so it should get a fair bit of use.
My Tarmac was more of an impulse purchase to tick another box on my list of bikes. I quickly grew to love riding it though so I’m pleased it’s in the ‘stable’.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?
The plan was to start racing downhill at Aston Hill on the 5th of September but injury has unfortunately stopped that from happening. I hope to start competing in the not too distant future though. I won’t be aiming for podiums but hopefully I won’t be right at the back…

Iain is the new technical bod at Petersfield and had the privilege of a brand new workshop on his first day! He’s been in the bike trade for eight and a half years and has achieved the Cytech Level 2 qualification.
What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
Primarily I ride trials which is a discipline centred around balance and control. I have never been a fan of going fast and trials is anything but, instead focusing on bike handling and explosive power. I get huge satisfaction when a manoeuvre is perceived to be effortless by spectators at an event or when I’m out training.
What do you ride?
- Rockman KORTZ Two 26” custom build
Why did you choose this bike?
I came from 20” wheeled trials bikes and the Rockman’s geometry compliments this but with the versatility of the 26” wheels.
Have you taken part in any cycling events in the past and are any planned for the future?
I used to compete at a national level and local club events but it is so much harder to train now that work takes up so much of my time. I would like to compete again in the future and will train as much as possible to achieve national status again, fitness permitting.

Dan is the youngest full time member of Cycleworks staff but makes up for his lack of age with plenty of enthusiasm. He’s been riding bikes for 4-5 years and started off dirt jumping before progressing in racing downhill and more recently cross country (with the arrival of a new bike). Now sponsored by Last bikes and Funn componentry, Dan can normally be found at his local trails in Sheet or a top secret skatepark somewhere in Hampshire. For the muddier side of riding he’ll be on his Marin down at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or the South Downs.
What sort of cycling do you do and what do you specifically enjoy about it?
I most ride dirt jumps, but also cross country and a bit of downhill.
What do you ride?
- Last Bikes Ruffnix with Funn componentry.
- Sunday BMX.
- Fourscale 44 Fixie.
Why did you choose those bikes?
I’m sponsored by Last bikes and Funn components so the Ruffnix is a team bike for 2010. The Sunday was chosen because it’s light and strong and perfect for riding street and park. The fixie is my commuting bike!
