2010 Fork Review

Here’s an overview of the 2010 Rock Shox and Fox fork ranges, as well as maintenance advice to keep them working at their best.

Rockshox

All Rockshox forks share variations on Motion control damping, Dual air springs, U-turn air or coil springs.

Rockshox forks are separated by the external structure of the fork and their travel for their intended purpose. Choose the fork that suits your frame and riding style

  • Sid – lightweight cross country
  • Reba – lightweight trail
  • Revelation – trail riding, but lightweight
  • Pike – trail riding, but a bit tougher than revelation
  • Lyric – all mountain
  • Totem – free-ride
  • Boxxer – downhill

See below for a few of the forks that we sell from the Rockshox range. there are many options on each range, not just in terms of model but also colour. So please come in and discuss your fork requirements, we are happy to help.

SID
  • 100-80mm of travel
  • lightweight and stiff 32mm design with power bulges
  • Standard QR axle
  • the ‘race’ model has motion control damping
  • the ‘team’ model has black box motion control damping
  • You have the option of a crown mounted lock-out or a handlebar mounted ‘push-lock’
  • New Blackbox Motion Control damper. This gives the fork, much better control over a wider range of bump types and shapes.

“It really is a lot better than standard motion control, I have ridden Rock Shox forks ever since they were acquired by SRAM and this damping system is their best yet. Supple on the bumps, controlled when pedalling and braking, brilliant” – Dave Farmer

  • up to 120mm of travel
  • Lightweight and stiff 32mm design with power  bulges
  • Reba forks are available in QR or Maxle bolt through options.
  • They are all air sprung for lightness
  • the ‘race’ model has motion control damping
  • the ‘team’ model has black box motion control damping
  • You have the option of a crown mounted lock-out or a handlebar mounted ‘push-lock’
  • New Blackbox Motion Control damper. This gives the fork, much better control over a wider range of bump types and shapes.

Fox Forx

The Fox forx range is simple, but similar to Rockshox has many many options to choose from. We stock a few forks from each brand, and can order any fork that they make to suit the exact specification that you require.

Fox forks are available in three types;

  • Vanilla – coil sprung
  • Float – air sprung
  • Talas -air sprung with travel adjustment
  • Fox forks are available in three chassis designs;
  • F-series – super light (no vanilla option)
  • 32mm series – all spring types available
  • 36mm series – all spring types available

They also make the 40mm downhill series of forks.

The damping of forx forks is super smooth, and is what they are renowned for. The damping oil is open bath and can move around inside the forx to give them a ‘floating’ feeling.

When choosing your fox fork the model name describes the damping adjustments on the fork for instance ‘R’ means Rebound ‘L’ means Lockout and ‘C’ means Compression.

The following forks are a few that we like and recommend;

Maintenance

Remember that your fork contains moving parts. During use these get dirty and the fluids used to lubricate these parts will dry out.

No fork is maintenance free, but thankfully it is pretty simple to maintain most modern suspension forks.

If your suspension fork is used at least once a week it will need a FULL service annually (or more often if used more). This is usually performed by the service centre for the brand Mojo suspension and Fisher Outdoor, or a third party such as TF tuned.

You/we can also perform a simple half service. Dependant on your fork brand (and model, SID forks are very lightweight and only have about 3cc on lubrication oil, and therefore need servicing very often) you will need to check your manual for how often this servicing should be done.

It is really easy to keep your fork working smoothly and for a long time, ensuring that it works well and lasts well. Please pop into any of our shops and ask if you have any questions, all our staff ride bikes and are aware of the maintenance that is involved in keeping a modern MTB bike working at it’s best.

If you have a technical question, it may be best to ask to speak with one of our mechanics, above all just ask.
